montejo
All of the places Lola Montejo has lived has influenced her aesthetic in ways that are as layered as her work itself.  Lola was born in Portsmouth, England but since her family is originally from Spain, they returned to Madrid when she was very young. From there the Montejo family traveled until finally settling in the United States when she was a teenager.

Lola's grandmother was an artist and her dad was singer, so their home became an informal salon where musicians and artists often visited and  whose conversations sparked an appreciation and understanding of art in Lola. During their years in Spain the Montejo family lived in the arts district of Madrid and Lola spent much time visiting the close museums. She remembers wanting to be an artist as early as 8 years old, after seeing the great works by the master artists El Greco and Picasso. For a period of time, the family lived in New York. There Lola first experienced American abstraction, and the New York School artists’, and was drawn to their unrestrained freedom of expression.

Each of these diverse places and people informs and inspires Lola’s work and serves as a foundation for Lola’s formal education; earning her BFA from the Metropolitan University of Denver where she studied on a full academic scholarship. Soon after, she graduated from the University of Colorado in Denver with her MA in Art Education and from there she continued her education at Azusa Pacific University in California where she earned her MFA.

Lola early artistic training was focused on the classical and representational painting. Then, her last year as an undergraduate, Lola spent a summer in a residency in France. During a visit to the Musée Picasso in Paris, she was reminded of her childhood admiration for Picasso and her ever-present connection with abstraction. Awakening of her affinity for abstraction was inextricably imprinted in her aesthetic after that experience and it was then that Lola began painting abstractly.

Lola currently lives and teaches painting and drawing as a adjunct professor in Colorado.
